Innovative Green Nanotechnology Study by IUS Researcher Featured in Nature’s Scientific Reports

The International University of Sarajevo (IUS) proudly announces the publication of a research paper titled “Synergistic Antifungal Activity of Lepidium sativum ZnO Nanoparticles and Nystatin Against Resistant Candida Species”, co-authored by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ragab Abdel Gawwad Ibrahim from the Genetics and Bioengineering (GBE) study program.

The paper has been published in Scientific Reports, part of the prestigious Nature Portfolio, one of the world’s most respected platforms for scientific research. Publishing in a Q1-ranked journal, positioned in the top tier of its field, represents an exceptional achievement and a testament to the dedication, innovation, and teamwork behind this study.

The research introduces a novel, green-synthesized approach to tackling antifungal resistance — a growing global health concern. The study reveals that zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles derived from garden cress (Lepidium sativum) can significantly enhance the effectiveness of the conventional antifungal drug nystatin against resistant Candida strains.
This synergistic combination offers promising potential for developing new therapeutic strategies to combat drug-resistant fungal infections, which remain a major challenge in modern medicine.

Prof. Dr. Abdel Gawwad expressed his sincere appreciation to his co-authors and to the International University of Sarajevo for their continuous support and encouragement in advancing impactful scientific research.
