IUS RDC Initiative: Cultivating Flowers, Fostering Sustainability

The Research and Development Center (RDC) at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), supported by the IUS Vice-Rector for General Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Muhammed Yasir Göz and the IUS Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (IAE-IUS) initiated a flower-growing project. Seeds were nurtured in the RDC laboratory in a growth chamber under controlled conditions before being transplanted around the IUS campus.

This initiative goes beyond beautification since it also aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Research suggests that exposure to greenery and nature enhances mental and physical well-being, reducing stress, boosting mood, and encouraging physical activity (SDG 3 - Health and Well-being). A campus adorned with flowers creates a vibrant and inviting atmosphere, potentially benefiting the well-being of students and staff. Moreover, cultivating flowers offers experiential learning opportunities in plant science, responsibility, and environmental awareness, complementing classroom instruction and enriching the educational experience (SDG 4 - Quality Education). Additionally, a visually appealing campus adorned with flowers contributes to a more aesthetically pleasing and potentially healthier environment (SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities/Communities). Growing flowers from seeds reduces consumption and waste, aligning with the principle of responsible consumption and production (SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption/Production). Furthermore, planting native flowers can attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems (SDG 15 - Life on Land).

The project fostered a sense of community and enjoyment. With more experience, the RDC plans to continue this project next year, aiming for even better results. The RDC extends its gratitude to HR Assistant, Mrs. Senada Bašić and the technical support team for their valuable contributions.
